VINER FINDS INSPIRATION IN EASTERN EUROPE

Producer and author Michael Viner recently traveled to Russia to document his conversations with the women who inspired his book Shattered Dreams, Broken Promises. In this clip, they speak about the treatment of women in their country who are victims of abuse and working as prostitutes to survive.

SHATTERED DREAMS, BROKEN PROMISES: THE COST OF COMING TO AMERICA
by Michael Viner

Hundreds of thousands of women dream of escaping their harsh lives in Eastern Europe for the American dream they know only from movies and television. The chances that they will ever do so are slim. Even for those who make it to America, the reality is often very
different from what they had sought. In the end, very few of these women will live their dreams. For those lucky few who do, the journey is often fraught with pain and debasement.

It usually starts with the promise of an Internet marriage or a special travel broker. But what becomes of these Internet brides? What happens to thousands of women who pay extortionate fees to get a green card? All arrive to confront a completely foreign way of life––in a country where they seldom speak the language, may not know anyone, and frequently bear the burden of supporting entire families back home. All too often, they also confront the very brutality, sexual slavery and impoverishment they thought they were escaping.

Producer and author Michael Viner traveled throughout Eastern Europe to interview women of all ages and circumstances who say they are willing do anything to get to America. He has also interviewed women across the United States who have done just that. What is the
reality of their new lives? Was it worth the price?

The revealing and often-unsettling tales of these women, told in their own words, shines a light on a dark secret in American immigration. In the end, their stories are also uplifting as we come to understand what America means to them, the deprivation they left behind and the brighter futures they yearn for and sometimes achieve.
