Hawking (1942-2018) was widely considered to be the world' s greatest mind— a brilliant theoretical physicist whose work reconfigured models of the universe and redefined its basic governing laws. He was the recipient of many awards, medals, and prizes including the CBE, which he received in 1982, and in 1989, he was made a Companion of Honour. His book A Brief History of Time (1988) has sold more than 25 million copies.
